Mexican Artist Peso Pluma Faces Threats from Cartel, Cancels US Show
Mexican artist Peso Pluma has reportedly canceled a concert in Indiana due to death threats received from a cartel, according to various news outlets. Pluma had recently performed at MTV’s Video Music Awards on September 12, where banners bearing threats against him were unfurled in Tijuana, Mexico, just hours before the event, as reported by Punto Norte newspaper.
These banners were displayed on four different bridges across Tijuana, warning the singer against attending a scheduled October 14 concert in the city. One of the banners explicitly stated, “It will be your last performance because of your disrespectful loose tongue,” according to Vice. The threats were attributed to the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), as indicated by their signature.
As of now, Peso Pluma has not issued a public response to these threats, and no official reason has been provided for the cancellation of his September 16 show in Indianapolis. Additionally, other concerts in Indianapolis, Alabama, Wisconsin, and Illinois have been postponed, as per Ticketmaster.
Peso Pluma, a 24-year-old artist, made his U.S. television debut in April on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” and has since gained popularity, with 31 songs charting on Billboard’s Hot Latin Songs chart.
Concerned fans have taken to social media to express their worries, while some have pledged to protect the artist. Peso Pluma’s musical repertoire encompasses love ballads and danceable hip-hop influenced tracks, with some of his most popular songs delving into the narcocorrido genre, which focuses on the lives and activities of drug traffickers and cartels, as reported by Vice. One of his songs, “Siempre Pendientes,” features lyrics about Joaquin Guzman Loera, better known as El Chapo, and he performed this song on September 10 at a music festival in Mexico City, drawing a massive crowd.
Montserrat Caballero, the Mayor of Tijuana, has stated that the October 14 concert can proceed if Peso Pluma wishes to perform, with appropriate security measures in place. Peso Pluma, whose legal name is Hassan Emilio Kabande Laija, has garnered fame on both sides of the border, having appeared on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, collaborated with reggaeton superstar Karol G, and performed at Coachella and the VMAs.
